Vặt Hồng Pagoda is an important historical and cultural site located in Mộc Châu District, Sơn La Province. Situated on a gentle hillside in the center of Vặt Village, Mường Sang Commune, the pagoda is not only a Buddhist worship place but also a cultural and spiritual center for the local Thai ethnic community.

1. Historical Background

Vặt Hồng Pagoda was built around the 13th century, during the flourishing period of Buddhism in Vietnam. According to historical records, the pagoda has been restored multiple times, especially in 1908, under the direction of the Mộc Châu district leaders and with contributions from the local and surrounding communities.

2. Architecture and Current Condition

The pagoda features typical Theravada Buddhist architecture, with a foundation covering about 100 square meters. It includes stone pillars, walls, arched doors, two altars, a stone stele, and the tomb of a former abbot. However, due to wars and time, much of the pagoda is now in ruins.

3. Location and Scenery

Located on a gentle hill in the center of Vặt Village, Mường Sang Commune, Mộc Châu District, Sơn La Province, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Mộc Châu’s green tea hills, plum valleys, and towering mountains. The fresh and peaceful atmosphere creates an ideal space for sightseeing and spiritual reflection.

4. Cultural and Spiritual Significance

Vặt Hồng Pagoda is not only a place of Buddhist worship but also a cultural hub for the Thai ethnic community’s spiritual life. Traditionally, the pagoda hosts festivals in March-April and May-June, with ceremonies praying for rain, good fortune, and statue bathing rituals. These festivals are closely linked to agricultural beliefs and bring the community together, symbolizing the prosperity of the Thai land.

5. Preservation and Heritage Status

Vặt Hồng Pagoda was officially recognized as a provincial historical and cultural relic by the Sơn La People’s Committee in 2012. Currently, restoration and conservation efforts are ongoing to maintain the site for both worshippers and tourists. Some Buddha statues from the pagoda are preserved in the Sơn La Provincial Museum.
